Without doubt one of the biggest movies of 2023 (if not THE biggest) was the comedy Barbie. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film starred Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera and Will Ferrell and told the story of a Barbie doll who travels from Barbie Land to the real world.

In the film, Barbie experiences some unexpected changes in her life and heads to the real world on a journey of self-discovery. Ken tags along for the ride, which proves to be an eye-opening trip for him too, and together their lives are forever altered.

But… 

…I doubt I need to tell you any of this because you’re already familiar with Barbie, aren’t you? The film was a critical hit, as well as a box-office smash when it arrived in cinemas in 2023, and it was simply inescapable during the summer season.

And because Barbie was so popular (and profitable) at the cinema, when it came time to release the film on home video, Warner Bros. Pictures made sure there were a number of options for retail. These options included a standard DVD, a Blu-ray, a 4K disc, a digital edition, and some limited edition sets and exclusives. 

In short: You couldn’t move for Barbie. There were lots of different formats available and often releases designed to suit all tastes and budgets.

And of all the options available, I plumped for a special limited edition three-disc set. Why? Because this is Barbie, so why not?!

The set was available in the UK as a HMV/Fopp exclusive. It is titled the Barbie – Movie and Soundtrack Collection.

The Barbie – Movie and Soundtrack Collection includes two copies of the film, one on DVD and one on Blu-ray, as well as a copy of the soundtrack on CD (titled ‘Barbie Sounds’). The three discs are contained within a standard Blu-ray case.

Sitting alongside this case is a pink cardboard pouch, which contains six art cards. The pouch features an image of Robbie on one side and a gold ‘B’ on the reverse.

Both the Blu-ray case and the card pouch sit inside a thick, pink cardboard outer box which features a strong central image of Margot Robbie as Barbie. This outer box then sits within a pink plastic outer sleeve, which looks damn slick!

Why did I pick up this set, when a 4K release of Barbie exists? Well, largely because this set contains the soundtrack.

I had planned to purchase the Barbie soundtrack alongside either the 4K or Blu-ray edition of the film, but when I became aware the CD was packaged with the Blu-ray as part of a limited edition set, it made sense to grab this one while I could. Plus, the outer case caught my eye and who wouldn’t want this pink delight on their shelf? 

At some point in the future (possibly when it comes down in price), I might snag a copy of Barbie on 4K to add to this set, but for now I’m more than happy with this collection.
