Rewind the clock back to 1992, and comic book television show X-Men: The Animated Series was proving to be a big hit with television audiences. So much so, Polygram Video saw an opportunity for some home video action.
Working with Marvel Comics and Saban International, the company began to capitalise on the show’s success with the release of a collection of VHS cassettes. Each cassette would contain two episodes of the hit show (initially released in chronological order), and would provide X-Men fans with the opportunity to relive the series whenever the wished!
The first of these sets was released under the title X-Men: Night of the Sentinels, while the second was X-Men: Enter: Magneto & Deadly Reunions.

The front cover of Enter: Magneto & Deadly Reunions featured three members of the X-Men: Cyclops, Storm, and Rogue, locked in battle with their arch nemesis, Magneto. The cover also included associated text, as well as the Marvel Comics logo in the top left corner, and an image of the villainous Sabretooth in the bottom right corner.
On the reverse, was a comic book-inspired design featuring a mix of comic book imagery and text. The main text provided plot details for the two episodes and read as follows:
“As the X-Men struggle to expose the sinister plot to register and exterminate all mutants, they find themselves battling the most menacing mutant of all time: Magneto! Professor Xavier joins Cyclops, Rogue, Storm and the rest of the X-Men in a desperate fight to halt Magneto’s anti-human reign of chaos and destruction.
“Meanwhile Wolverine locks claws with his old nemesis: the prehistorically powerful mutant, Sabretooth!”

As with the previous release, the interior of the VHS case featured more X-Men-related artwork, along with cross sell for other titles in the collection, including Vol 1: Night of the Sentinels (pictured below); Vol 3: Captive Hearts & Cold Vengeance (also pictured below); Vol 4: Slave Island & The Unstoppable Juggernaut; and Vol 5: The Cure! & Come the Apocalypse.

As a big fan of the X-Men comics in the ’90s, and a huge fan of X-Men: The Animated Series, I simply adored the design of these VHS tapes when they were released – and I still love them now. The designs are crisp and clean, take a great of influence and design elements from the comics, and look action-packed.
Enter: Magneto and Deadly Reunions are also two great episodes from the show’s stellar first season. Having these in your collection back in 1993 was certainly a treat, and having them amongst my collection today is pretty sweet!
